Chestnut Trees: History, Culture, and Agroecological Practices

On November 6–7, 2025, the University of Milano-Bicocca will host a conference dedicated to chestnut trees and forest supply chains, bringing together historical, economic, and agroecological perspectives. The event, held at U6 – Agorà, Aula 41, will offer an interdisciplinary platform for historians, researchers, agronomists, and foresters to discuss this iconic tree and its role in Italian rural landscapes and economies.

The first day will focus on the historical study of chestnut cultivation, covering topics such as chestnut markets and prices between the 18th and 19th centuries, the socio-economic role of community chestnut groves, and the dietary and cultural functions of chestnuts over the centuries. Speakers from various Italian universities will present research highlighting traditional practices and their evolution over time.

The second day, November 7, will explore forest supply chains and agroecological systems, addressing themes such as foraging, traditional ecological knowledge, sustainable forest management, and the valorization of chestnut wood supply chains. The day will conclude with roundtables and open discussions, encouraging interdisciplinary exchanges and highlighting the challenges and opportunities for producers, local communities, and rural territories.

The event also contributes to continuing professional education for Agronomists and Foresters, supporting the dissemination of scientific knowledge and innovative practices that promote the sustainability of territories and rural communities.
